You know, some vehicles today need to have their 12v staring batteries charge rate controlled by something called a battery control module, because as the battery ages it needs to be charged more aggressively than a new battery, so when you’re changing a battery on a vehicle like this, we have to update the information in the battery control module and that’s usually called battery registration, in that way the battery control module won’t cause the alternator to overcharge or aggressively charge a new battery which would ruin that battery and possibly some components in the vehicle’s electrical system as well, so let’s take a look at how we can register a new battery with our scan tool connected to the vehicle’s OBD2 diagnostic connector. The tested BMW scan tools are Rheingold ISTA, Autel Maxisys, Foxwell NT510 Elite, foxwell nt530.
Part 1. How to use AUTEL MaxiSys Scan Tool to register a new BMW replacement battery with the vehicle’s battery control module. (Car model: BMW 3 series E90 2011)
Choose “Diagnostics”.
Choose “BMW”.
Automatic select…
Enter VIN manually or tap “Read” to acquire VIN.

Part 2. How to Register BMW F10 New Battery with Rheingold ISTA
This is a mini guide on how to use Rheingold ISTA register battery for BMW F10.
Procedures of BMW F10 Battery Registration by Rheingold ISTA:
Connect your hardware to your BMW vehicle,then open the Rheingold ISTA.
At first,read your vehicle there you go click on activities.
Select service function,select number 03 body go all the way down to voltage supply to select “Battery”
Select “Register battery change”
Then click on ABL register battery replacement

Part 3. BMW Battery Registration with foxwell nt510 elite (or nt530)
Foxwell NT510 is more than just an OBD2 scan tool. If you buy yourself the diagnostic scanner you can use if in the future you have problems with engine, airbag, transmission, ABS and more. As we all know NT510 will register a new battery to BMW, but have no idea how to.
Here’s the step-by-step tutorial on registering BMW battery with NT510 BMW scanner.
Background information:
What is BMW Battery Registration?
During BMW battery registration process the following happens.
Battery capacity is set to 80%
Current Odometer reading is stored
Delete stored battery statistics such as:
current,
voltage,
battery charge level.
Stored temperature statistics are deleted
During the battery registration process old battery charging history gets deleted. Now your BMW DME module knows the battery is new and doesn’t require as aggressive chargings as the old battery. This step should be performed every time the battery gets replaced.
If you change the battery rating and type you will need to perform coding as well to let your BMW (IBS / Power Module) know how to handle the new battery.

How-to:
Step 1: Replace BMW Battery
Better stick with an AGM (Advanced Glass Mat) battery instead of switching to lead acid batteries if the stock was AGM battery.
Step 2: Register a new battery
Locate the on board diagnostic (OBD – 2) port under the dashboard near your brake pedal. Plug your BMW Foxwell NT510 scan tool into this port.
Turn the key to option II but don’t not start engine. If you have a Push Start button press it a couple of times. Don’t press the brake pedal when you press the start button. All the dashboard lights should turn on.
Register the new BMW battery with NT510:
1.Plug your Foxwell NT510 BMW scanner into the OBD2 port under the dashboard.
2.Turn ignition on, the key to position II. Do not start your car.
3. Select BMW. Scan for VIN. It will automatically look up the VIN number. Once VIN is found press OK.
4. Scroll down to the Body menu 4.
5. Scroll down to Power Supply (Battery) and press Enter.
6. Select option 2 for Battery registration.
In the next screen, you can perform the following.
Register new battery. Battery replacement is the same as the original.
Change battery capacity to higher or lower.
Change battery type between AGM and lead acid battery.
NOTE:
Do not unplug the scanner during the battery registration process
Do not turn off the ignition during the battery programming.
You don’t need to run option 2 and 3 if your replacement battery has the same specs as the old battery. Just new battery registration is all you need to complete.

If you have already paired your Carly, skip pairing steps. We assume that the battery has already been replaced, and now we just need to complete the registration procedure.
Plugin Carly for BMW into the OBD2 port under the dashboard (driver’s side). Press the power button on your Carly if it has one. The red LED light will turn on.

Turn ignition to ON position. Don’t start the car. You can’t register a new battery if the engine is running.
Download Carly for BMW Pro. The free version of Carly does not allow you to perform battery registration. You can use the free version of Carly for BMW to see how Carly Battery Registration works but you can’t complete the registration. Use the free version to check if battery registration is possible for your BMW model and year.
Besides the Carly for BMW Pro, you will need to purchase the Battery Registration add-on which is another $10. Total cost for the Carly Adapter, Carly Pro and in-app battery registration place this setup in the mid $100-$200 range.

Turn on Bluetooth on your Android or iPhone.
Search for a new Bluetooth device.
Select Carly Adapter on your screen.

Next, launch Carly for the BMW Pro app. On the bottom of the Carly Dashboard, you need to select the BMW model and then hit connect.

Read through all the warnings and scroll to the bottom. Select Continue to battery registration. If you haven’t purchased the add-on, Unlock battery registration will appear on this page.
Next, you will see two options. The first is to perform battery registration and the second to code a new battery. If your new battery has different specs than the old battery, you need to complete both coding and registration. If your new battery has the same exact specs as the old battery, you will only need to perform battery registration by pressing “Register same battery type”

Notes:
Do not stop the app or remove the Carly adapter when you are performing battery registration with Carly.
Do not start the car. Ignition should be on. All dash light on. Position II.
Read and clear codes from the CAS module before you perform battery registration with Carly. Clear any stored codes from the CAS module.
