What is a Car Code Reader

A car code reader is one of the simplest car diagnostic tools that you’ll find. These devices are designed to interface with a car’s computer and report trouble codes in a very no-frills sort of way. Cars and trucks that were built prior to 1996 require specific, proprietary OBD-I code readers, and newer vehicles use universal Auto code reader. This type of car code reader is typically inexpensive, and some parts stores and shops will even read your codes for free.
How Does a Car Code Reader Work?

Computer controls started to show up on cars in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and these systems rapidly grew in complexity. Even very early computer controls included basic “on board diagnostic” functionality, and these early, OEM-specific systems are collectively referred to as OBD-I. In 1995, for the 1996 model year, automakers around the world started transitioning toward the universal OBD-II standard, which has been in use ever since.

Both OBD-I and OBD-II systems work in essentially the same way, in that they monitor a variety of sensor inputs and outputs. If the system determines that anything is out of spec, it sets a “trouble code” that can be used in diagnostic procedures. Each code corresponds to a specific fault, and there are also different types of codes (i.e. hard, soft) that represent both ongoing and intermittent problems.

When a trouble code is set, a special indicator on the dashboard typically lights up.

This is the “malfunction indicator lamp” and it essentially just means that you can hook up a car code reader to see what the problem is. Of course, some codes won’t cause this light to turn on.

Every OBD system has some type of connector that can be used to retrieve codes. In OBD-I systems, it is sometimes possible to use this connector to check codes without a car code reader.

For instance, it’s possible to bridge GM’s ALDL connector and then examine the blinking check engine light to determine which codes have been set. In a similar fashion, codes can be read from OBD-I Chrysler vehicles by turning the ignition key on and off in a specific pattern.

In other OBD-I systems and all OBD-II systems, trouble codes are read by plugging a car code reader into the OBD connector. This allows the code reader to interface with the car’s computer, pull the codes, and sometimes perform a few other basic functions.
Using a Car Code Reader

In order to use a car code reader, it has to be plugged into an OBD system. Each Heavy Duty Diagnostic Tool has its own connector, which can be located in a wide variety of different of places. These connectors are often found under the hood in the vicinity of the fuse box, but they may be located under the dash or elsewhere. In vehicles that were built after 1996, the OBD-II connector is typically located under the dash near the steering column. In rarer cases, it may be located behind a panel in the dash, or even behind an ashtray or other compartment.

After the OBD socket has been located and hooked up to, the car code reader will interface with the car’s computer.

Simple code readers are actually able to draw power through an OBD-II connection, which means that plugging the reader in may actually power it up and turn it on as well. At that point, you will typically be able to:

1.Read and clear codes
2.View basic parameter IDs
3.Check and possibly reset readiness monitors

The specific options vary from one car code reader to another, but at the bare minimum you should be able to read and clear codes. Of course, it’s a good idea to avoid clearing the codes until you have written them down, at which point you can look them up on a trouble code chart.
Car Code Reader Limitations

Although car code readers are great at providing you with a jumping off point for your diagnostic procedure, a single trouble code can have any number of different causes.

That’s why professional diagnostic technicians typically use more expensive scan tools that come with extensive knowledge bases and diagnostic procedures. If you don’t have that sort of tool at your disposal, then you can check out basic trouble code and troubleshooting information online.
ELM327 Vs Car Code Readers

ELM327 scan tools are an alternative to basic car code readers. These devices use ELM327 technology to interface with your vehicle’s OBD2 vehicle diagnostics, but they don’t have any built-in software, display, or anything else that a traditional code reader has. Instead, these devices are designed to provide an interface between a tablet, smart phone, laptop, or other device, and your car’s computer. The most basic freeware will allow you to use an ELM327 scan tool and your phone as a basic code reader, while more advanced software will provide you with a more powerful interface.

Fault: A SAAB car has run about 50 thousand km. After the heat engine flameout the car couldn’t start again.

Check: After testing, the starting motor can work as usual. The engine seemed start the car when it just rolled. After diagnosed with GM Tech2, there was no fault code in Engine control unit. Checking the spark plug, electrodes filled with petrol. The spark plug “drowned”. Although dried out the petrol and tried to start the engine, the fault still appeared. According to these situations, it can be certain that car ECU had no problem. Then checked the engine from many aspects including gas circuit, oil passages,igniting circuit,cylinder pressure,gas distribution and ignition timing. Referring to the previous checking results, gas circuit, oil passages and ignition were all ok except ignition timing cylinder pressure. Many components should be taken out when proofread timing, so checked the cylinder pressure first. After connected to cylinder compression gauge, started the engine. At the first time, the reading was about 1MPa. When the engine hadn’t stopped running, the maximum reading reached 1.2 Mpa after the second compression stroke. At that time, the car deviations seemed larger than ordinary cars. Let the starting motor crank up the engine for a longer time. The maximum reading of cylinder compression gauge can reach 1.6 Mpa. But according to the standard, the OBD2 Scanner pressure of this car should be between 0.9 MPa to 1.2 MPa. Based on my repairing experience, it seemed that the silencer would be plugged by something. Run the engine again, I checked the exhausting situation. Oh, there was no air-out. Took out the 2 lambda sensor at the front and run the engine, the engine rolled and started the car successfully. Everything was ok. Took out the silencer and checked it, I found that the back of it was so heavy. I used endoscope and found that it was plugged by ices.

The owner just drives the car during the quotidian commute. The Professional Diagnostic Tool runs about 20km everyday and it hasn’t run at a high speed for a long time. That caused the back of the silencer can’t discharge the water, it’s colder in these days, the water became ices and the silencer was plugged.
Troubleshoot: Clean out the water and ices in the silencer, meanwhile let the car run at a high speed at irregular intervals.

I received my Tech 2 today. It was a longer than expected shipping time but am quite happy with it so far. I have not yet used it and my first task will be to perform a CKP relearn. I’ll let you know how it goes in the following parts.

Package: I did receive the TIS2000 software disc. It was in the bag along with the product stickers. So yeah, I got the full package.

What GM Tech 2 does?
I just performed a CKP sensor relearn and it went perfectly. No problems reported. I also performed a complete diagnostic of my ABS including the motor and EBCM. No problems reported. I also went for a drive for some real time data logging. All looked good. It was amazing to note all of the misfires that were being reported prior to the CKP relearn process. No misfires after the procedure.

Well gentlemen, this unit appears to do everything a real GM Tech2 does. It works perfectly so far. The general quality of the unit also appears to be quite good with a robust case and very bright and clear screen. I am very satisfied so far. I know that I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of what it can do and I guess I will discover its various functions as time goes on. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

What Windows Operation Tech2 is compatible?
I keep an old Windows XP laptop in the garage which has my service manuals for all my cars including the Mercedes BENZ C5. At first I’m not sure what I can do with the TIS2000 software, then after I check find it’s working. Someone said VMWare works, and someone suggest Windows compatibility mode works sometimes. Try setting it for windows 7 compatibility and see if it works then, or try another mode like XP. I haven’t try this, and your options?

OBD-II scanners differ in function

 

Obd2 scanner differ in function. Some only work as mere trouble code readers, while others can interact with sensors throughout a vehicle. Accessing trouble codes will not turn your check engine light off. Accessing the codes will only tell you the malfunctions the vehicle’s computer has recorded. Codes can be erased with a scanner, but if the problem has not been fixed, the check engine light will always come back on.

Software-wise, my choice for this on Android is Torque, an excellent app that not only can collect all the OBD-II stats, but also graph and log them in myriad ways. (There’s also a free version, Torque Lite, that has a fair deal of the functionality of the full version.) Grab either one from the Google Play store.

Note that this solution is for read-only access to the OBD-II system in the car. You can’t modify the running parameters of the vehicle with this adapter, unfortunately (or fortunately, perhaps, as it’s very easy to make a mess of things). Flashing your car’s computer with a new fuel curve or ignition timing map is a nontrivial exercise that requires an adapter with different voltage levels and different Auto Repair Software. So, don’t worry about breaking your car with this solution—you’re just “peeking under the hood”.

Make sure the vehicle is turned off. Locate the Data Link Connector under the steering wheel. This is an outlet that allows access to the diagnostic computer, which in most vehicles is on the driver side.Connect your Professional Diagnostic Tools to the Data Link Connector. The scanner cable has in a 16-pin plug that should naturally fit into the outlet.Insert your vehicle’s key into the ignition cylinder and switch to “On.” Depending on the brand of OBD-II device, you may also need to turn the engine on and allow it to idle.

What is a Drive Cycle in OBD-II?

Drive Cycles are a warm up sequence that the vehicle must complete to allow conditions for all of the onboard tests.  When codes are cleared, so are diagnostic results, this means that if you are going for an emissions test and you have a fault code, if you clear the code just before the test, there will be not only a Distance since DTC Cleared setting, but your vehicle will not have ran through several drive cycles which are required and your vehicle will fail by default.

There is a flaw in the NEXIQ USB Link 2 driver installer that causes any J1534 compliant software to look in the “WINDOWS” folder for the dll files, if your windows folder is called WinXP, Win7, WINNT or any other name, PF-Diagnose is fine but the Nexiq driver will fail to load.  This is known by Nexiq and is to be corrected in the latest driver install, I recommend you install the latest Nexiq drivers or .contact Nexiq.  This is a Nexiq problem.  Pocketfleet is not a Nexiq Distributor. if you have one of our approved adapters by DG Technologies, you will not have this issue.

There are 2 main scan tools used for GM vehicles, the GM Tech II handheld and the MDI-2 GDS2 laptop based system. From 1992 to 2009 + certain newer vehicles,  GM vehicles use the Tech 2 handheld scan tool.The Tech 2 is the same scan tool as is used also for GM, Saab,
Izusu, Suzuki and Saturn including the Saturn Astra (Opel import).

The Tech 2 scan tool simply uses different 32 MB software cards which are removable and switchable. We are lucky it is so versatile. Extra memory cards which cost an average of $449.00 allow us to expand our diagnostic capabilities really cheaply.

The automotive diagnostic equipment Tech 2 scan tool is also used for reflashing GM vehicles.It uses a serial adapter with a network cable to connect the tech 2 to your laptop. NOTE  a serial adapter is used on the laptops 9 pin serial port.DO NOT try to connect the tech 2 directly to your laptop with just a network cable. IT WON”T WORK.
