HOW WILL THE GM MDI BE USED?

The new GM MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.

The GM MDI is initially being introduced with Pass-Thru programming capabilities only. It can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and will support all vehicles into the future.

The GM MDI will be required to perform diagnostics on selected NAO vehicles for model year 2009. Diagnostic software is scheduled to be released for the GM MDI during the fourth quarter of 2008.

Regulations require programming procedures to be compliant with SAE Recommended Practice J2534. The GM SPS is compliant with SAE Recommended Practice J2534, and the GM MDI is compliant with the portions of SAE J2534 that are applicable for GM vehicles.

What protocols does the GM MDI support?

For immediate use — At present, vehicles have two buses on the 16 pin connector
(high speed and low speed GMLAN). The GM MDI communicates using all of the existing GM protocols, the same as the Tech 2:
– UART
– Class 2
– KWP2000
– GMLAN (CAN)
Beginning with the 2008 model year vehicles, Pass-Thru will be the only programming method available. (Remote will continue to be available for previous vehicles.)

(Solved) VXDIAG VX Manager license expiration 12/31/2020

Got everything up and running. I noticed the VX Manager license showed an expiration of 12/31/2020. That about right?

Replied:
Yea, about right, and when I was setting up TIS2000 and upgraded the license for it, noticed that it was slightly longer date than the initial nano license to start with when I was setting up T2w. So got a feeling that is only upgrades the license for so long from a given date,, but if you go in later, it will further the license by the same time frame for a later date instead.

The only really downside I see, is in GDS2 for the GM MDI side of things, and wondering if there is going to be any updates to the cracked version. Hence in GDS2, GM global 2016.4.0 , the latest corvette is the 2016 model, with nothing listed for 2017, nor 2018 models.

With any luck, they get the on cloud version completed for GM, and it will either have the updates, or at least allow you to use the online version for the 2017 and later GM models instead.

If you did not see the cloud version, go to VX manager, to the far right tab, and will bring you up to speed.

It is a bit different from most. I make and program keys for a living and for a while the SSM was the only thing that would program the prox fobs. Not true anymore but I still paid less for the VXdiag with software than I would for a single piece of software for my T-code pro. . and there are 3 for Subaru. I have one which only covers the earliest models.

I have one from https://www.obd2tool.com/ and find it useful as it will talk to everything on the car, including immobilizer systems. . . it emulates the SSM3 and uses cracked SSM software (which is why it’s such a pain to set up). It is *extremely* picky about OS. I wound up having to buy a new(ish) laptop running win7 to get it going. Wouldn’t work with XP or 10.

tip and review 3: need an immobilizer code to program keys/fobs

You have to have a NASTF LSID or be very good friends with a Subaru parts manager.

You need an immobilizer code (which is VIN specific) to program keys/fobs. It does not change so once you have it for your car you can go nuts. Odds are your dealer would probably give you YOUR immobilizer code if you shop there somewhat regularly. They may charge you for it as I know they have to pay a couple of bucks to mama subie for them.

There’s also an ‘enabling password’ which is also static and I suppose is a very flimsy extra layer of security to protect the immobilizer features of the SSM. It’s 3781.

tip and review 4: need a code from the dealer

It definitely does more than a regular scanner.

It just depends on if you think having complete access to all the systems in the car is worth it. It’s nice to have when I need it. I had a VDC code that was for the steering angle sensor. Rather than go to the dealer, I just busted out the knock off SSM and calibrated it in the driveway.

I tried to reprogram a new key with it, but you need a code from the dealer.

Good to know:
When you do have a key, there are a variety of ways to program your key fob which are Subaru model specific. In one example, you have to use your lock/unlock buttons on your driver’s side door to input a serial number located inside of your key fob. In another, you have to insert your key in the ignition and turn it on and off before pressing the buttons on your key fob. These sound really simple. But there’s a huge catch. Most of the newer Subaru models can’t be reprogrammed from home. That’s because many of the new Subarus have a proximity key, push button start, and don’t actually use a key at all.

All of these DIY methods require the skill and know-how before you start the process, because they all have to be done very quickly once you start. In the first example, you have to input the serial number using the lock and unlock buttons on your driver side door within 30 seconds of beginning; the serial numbers are about 8 digits long. Then you have to input it again. If the first number is “4” you would press: lock-lock-lock-lock, unlock, and then move on to the next number. So if the first 3 numbers are “412” you would press: lock-lock-lock-lock, unlock, lock, unlock, lock, lock. Though this seems simple, you have to do it exactly correctly two times in a row, within 1 minute total. Talk about stressful!

In the second example, you have to turn your key from the “off” to “on” position in your ignition 10 times within a matter of seconds. Sometimes just turning it to the “on” position to get going down the road is a challenge. All of these methods are only possible on older Subaru models that utilize a key, don’t have a proximity key, and don’t have complex technology systems like automatic lift gates.

If you have the patience for any of these methods, there are online tutorial for your specific make and model. Google will help you a lot.

I’ve heard rumblings that they changed things for the 2018 MY – doubt they will work.

2015 WK 3.6L and 2015 DS 5.7L:
I connected it to my 2015 DS and my wife’s 2015 WK with no issues. I disabled the side view mirror tilt in reverse on her WK (only thing she didn’t like about it) and she was thrilled. There are functions to bleed ABS, program tire sizes, etc. There are literally hundreds of sensor readings, dozens of tests, actuators and misc functions that you can perform that seem to be very vehicle specific – which you would expect. Every switch/gadget in the vehicle seems to have a corresponding sensor reading of some kind in the software. The only odd behavior I saw was when I connected to the ABS computer of my DS… the EVIC freaked out and started screaming to service the ABS. Maybe that is a safety feature of some kind so folks don’t go driving while messing with the ABS computer? Powering the vehicle off and on again made the ABS warning go away. I could not find any “PROXI alignment” functions – maybe they don’t apply to my vehicles?

2014 dodge avenger:
One vehicle i tested with: a 2014 dodge avenger …. just fine.
was able to flash a module update and program a new key with the unit.
try the emulator on: DRB III emulator confirmed working.

2010 Charger:

2006 Jeep Liberty:

I ordered a witech micropod 2 clone with drb3 functionality.
MicroPod II comes with version 17.04.27 software, drb3 support is not installed automatically but can still be found after install. Says it’s good for offline use only, but that should be enough to mess with the TPMS.
All modules except the BCM and ABS computer are still compatible with the DRBIII on the 06’s.

This is a working offline Witech. I just got it connected successfully. Software V17.04.27 was installed on a Windows 7 laptop no problem. It did successfully populate the VIN and can read the ECU.

2004 Dodge:
got a 2004 Dodge pickup and under the emulator worked perfectly.

2003 PT Cruiser:
Basically no other modules other than the Engine, work. I cannot connect to the transmission, ABS, VTSS, SKIM, radio, cluster, etc. But everything in the engine module can be tested, actuated, etc.
Luckily for me, I really only needed the DRBIII to write the Pinion factor for manual transmissions, which is conveniently in the ‘engine’ part which works.
Maybe I really need to invest in an older VCI pod so that everything else works.

Chrysler after 2003:

Good to know: When to use DRB3 & when to use wiTech?
The DRB3 emulator is part of Chrysler’s Witech software. The Witech software supports two different pass-through devices, The VCI pod which is sold with the Witech system and the Chrysler Starmobile. The DRB3 emulator is a convenience item for dealerships to allow the use of their current witech scan-tool on older non CAN bus vehicles. It is not by any means a cost saving option.

GM tech2 test on 1991 Corvette systems

what is in the menu for a 1991 Corvette systems and a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1L for the same. There are the 2 cars I own. Also what software version as I have seen 33.004 and 33.007 for GM english language. I am assuming I only need the dongle for the PC software if I want to reflash the ECU rather than just maintain the 2 cars. One of the things I don’t see mentioned even in the Bosch manual is the relearn crank sensor on the Pontiac or much about the 91 that the software claims to cover but no mention of bi-directional on the 91 Corvette.

OK, I will have to spend some time to write down all of the menu items just for the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. I did capture a screen for that car for what the GM Tech2 calls a Crank Position Variation Relearn.

The only vehicles listed under 91 is Saturn, however I have 33.004, so not sure if there is a 33.007 and it covers 91 better. If I enter 92 I have the option of doing diagnostics on a Y body with L98, which is certainly not for a 92.

Perhaps for the 91 Corvette you need a different memory card, like this one.

I wonder if with the CD and dongle it is possible to download the older disc? The ABS and usual emissions stuff is the mot important for me right now on the Pontiac and ABS on the 91 Corvette

With the version of TIS2000 I have the versions supported are 27.010 and 27.012. I have no way see what is on those versions without downgrading my memory card, but would have no way to go back to 33.004.

First read tips:

1.Uninstall the firewall, antivirus software.

anti-virus software can flag up Nissan Consult 3 Plus software as having a virus. This is a false positive and is due to the software containing the application file like .exe. So Before setup the device software, please disable/uninstall anti-virus software or install a more reliable virus scanner!

2.Setup the Consult 3 plus V75.20 to the C drive in the “NTFS” format.

Here several pieces of simple guide to follow:
1.  Open IE exploer browser to run “Start.html” .
2.  Open folder “C30 License” to run “C3PCheckLicense.exe”.
3.  Run “V80003T_20101215_x32.exe” to enable Bluetooth.
4.  Open folder “ReprogramData” to run “pus_v65.1F.exe”.

Then, Nissan consult 3 plus v75.20 software will work greatly.

* Check the wireless card is properly seated in the MDI.
* Confirm LEDs on the wireless card are lighted when the MDI is powered.
* Verify the GM MDI and PC are within range of the Access Point or Router.
* Verify that the PC is connected to the Access Point or Router.
* Verify signal strength of the wireless network from the PC.
* Check Firewall Settings on your PC
* USB connection takes precedence, unplug USB cable.
* Wired Ethernet connection takes precedence, unplug Ethernet cable.
* Connect to MDI using USB and run MDI Manager to verify the Wireless Settings are configured correctly. ( Refer to: How do I configure the Wireless interface* )
oWireless interface is enabled.
oAP settings configured for proper security (authentication, encryption).
oSignal Quality (fair, good, excellent) indicates connected to AP.

* Check Firewall Settings on your PC.
* Verify a USB Hub is not being used (MDI has a fixed USB address).
* Verify that only one MDI is connected to your PC using USB.
* Verify the USB driver has been installed on the PC (look for device name ‘ETAS USB Remote NDIS Network Device’ under Network Connections).
* Try connecting to other USB ports on the PC.

3.What if MDI is unable to connect on Wired Ethernet ?
* Check Ethernet cable connections.
* Check Firewall Settings on your PC.
* Verify the MDI and the PC are cabled into separate LAN connections on the same network.
* Verify that the PC is properly configured and can communicate on the network.
* USB connection takes precedence, unplug USB cable.
* Connect to car diagnostic scanner MDI using USB and run MDI Manager to verify the Wired Ethernet Settings are configured correctly. ( Refer to: How do I configure the Wired Ethernet interface* )

GM Tech2 testing HVAC actuator motors

I was looking for an example like Testing GM HVAC with GM Tech2. I have an 08 CTS that has the intermittent ticking mode door actuator. After an accidental battery drain, the passenger side stopped blowing cold air although for the past few months I noticed at times it lagged behind the driver side, temp wise. The driver side had always been fine until after the battery drain. It normally starts out fine with vent temps as low as 37 deg but has begun to fade mainly when the car is started up after cabin temps are already high where it hovers around 70 deg. I plugged in the Tech 2 which I’m still fairly new to and checked the blend doors cautiously as I didn’t want to create more trouble by initiating a test that I did not fully understand.

There were no stored codes and the mode door and recirculation door appeared to have functioned normally as the values and air sound in the vents changed when they were commanded. The blend door motors however, both stayed fixed at 51 counts which I believe corresponds to the lowest temp setting of 60 deg they were set at. When I increased the console temp it also increased on the Tech 2 display but the counts did not change and the vent temps seemed to maintain the same bias with the passenger side blowing hot. The counts did not change when the temps were raised for each actuator using the Auto Scan Tool Tech 2 either.

I did not perform the “On/Off” button test that you did here because I was not sure what it would do at the time, but intend to give that a try. I have also read that there is a calibration procedure that can be performed that I need to investigate further. I believe my situation is a combination of both calibration and actuator deterioration being brought to the surface by the recent battery drain.

I recommend that you buy gm tech2 on OBD2 website. They are cheap, logistics is fast, and after-sales service is also very good. I have been using it for a year and there is no problem with the quality of the product.
