How to save ISTA-D BMW Diagnostic Operations and Tests?

I have installed New BMW ICOM software ISTA-D (3.48) on my laptop. It works well and could read the error codes and perform tests.

It seems though that the readings and the tests results (i.e. the operations) are not saved anywhere on my laptop so they cannot be reviewed at a later date. In operation list, when I chose and click on a finished one I get the message: “order data processed on a different device and could not be downloaded from the IPS service”. So my question is:

1: Are these actually saved somewhere else and I could not find them?

2: If they were not saved, is there any setting change to be done is in ISTA-D so that these operations can be saved?

Around the two questions I search answer on forums and I do find a solution which was surprisingly worked for me. Here I would like to share with you.

Solution: You have to enable FASTA in ISTAGUI.exe.config file – see first key value set to true, leave everything else as is. This should enable Operations Logs in ISTA. Not 100% sure that this is the reason the operations report populates, but it never did before and also saves the progress of actions so that it can be started again (Once vehicle is ID’d, click on Finished). Try and see. To be successful in saving, I think you will need at least one action performed (either FUB or ABL, doesn’t really matter). Because its Standalone, the Transfer part of my ISTA will stay “In Progress” and doesn’t go anywhere.

Feedback on BMW F22 M235i Coding Adventure with E-sys cable

Days ago, I used the new ENET cable to manage to do some coding on BMW F22 M235i. Then, i share my coding adventure on forums. And here is one of useful feedback. Put them here and it works.

My post:

“Finally had enough time off work to get all the software installed onto my laptop (over 7GB of files). Once installed I took my new E-SYS cable and connected to the OBD II port in the car. Note, if you haven’t found this connection yet it took me a while. My old E92 had a little plastic door right above the hood release, not on the F22. Everything being black I had to take a flashlight up under the driver side before I found it. No cover on it, just sits along the side kick panel above and back from the trunk release button.

Fired up the car (you can put your car on battery tender instead) and connected my new cable to the port and into the laptop. Fired up my new software (without the needed token files) and hit “connect” and prayed it would work. After two or so minutes of files loading and the bmw diagnostic scanner connection establishing communication with the car I had an active connection

Not having all the software fully licensed for use yet I did some simple looking around and check to see if my car was supported with the default F20 file set. I was able to the read my cars VIN and populate all the internal settings in the software configuration. Really cool! I now have access to all the internal data settings stored in my ECU. Save a copy of the original settings (will back them up to be safe) and shutdown. Once i get the token files I will begin finding and coding the different settings.

Pretty exciting stuff that I get to be my normal computer geek self and play with my favorite toy at the same time. Will keep this thread updated with my experience as I proceed.”

“You don’t need to be a computer software developer to install and use the software, but that won’t hurt either. The reason you are finding it difficult to find all the required information and setup in one location, as best I can tell, is that a lot of what is being done could be consider in violation of warranty and/or software rights. I think the people who have ventured into this are vary worried about being exposed to the powers to be, or worst held in some legal contempt for helping others change computer settings in someone else’s vehicle.

I had to make contact with no less than 3 individuals who have experience with the process and access to the software before I could even get it started. Now that I made it pass the initial issues I feel pretty good about performing these changes to my own car. I guess we will see shortly as I now have my token to perform

How To Modify VO (Vehicle Order) with ICOM NCS Expert

This is the instruction on how to change vehicle order (VO) with NCS Expert, on BMW vehicles except F series.

VO modify tools:

ICOM A2 NCS Expert

(for BMW F series, you need ENET cable + E-sys)

steps to modify VO:

1.In NCS Expert, load the Expertmode profile.

2.Press F1 or the VIN/ZCS/FA button.

3.Press F3 or the ZCS/FA f. ECU button.

4.In the Choose CHASSIS pop-up window, choose the E89 chassis and press the OK button.

5.In the Choose ECU pop-up window, choose the CAS ECU and press the OK button.

6.The model (CHASSIS), VIN number (FG), and VO (FA) should be displayed in NCS Expert.

7.Press F2 or the Enter FA button to modify the VO.

8.In the Choose CHASSIS pop-up window, choose the E89 chassis and press the OK button.

9.In the Enter VIN pop-up window, verify that the Vin listed is the correct VIN number for the vehicle. The last digit attached to the VIN number is a checksum. You should not have to change anything on this step. Just verify and press the OK button.

10.In the Enter FA pop-up screen, for the Attribute text field, input the SA or Service Code. After typing in the code, press the Add button, and verify that the code was listed in the list of FA codes. After verifying, press the OK button.

-SA codes will begin with a “$”
-Service Codes will begin with a “+”

11.Press F6 or the Back button.

12.Press F4 or Process ECU button.

13.For the Choose ECU pop-up window, select CAS and press the OK button.

14.Press F2 or the Change job button.

15.From the Choose job pop-up window, select FA_WRITE and press the OK button.

16.Under “get coded:”, verify that CAS is the ECU selected to get coded. Also verify the JOBNAME is equal to FA_WRITE, and then press F3 or the Execute job button.

17.After the job has ended, we need to also write the new VO to the LMA ECU so that it will be both wrote to the CAS and LMA ECU. Press F1 or Change ECU button.

18.From the Choose ECU pop-up window, choose the BMW Engineer Software and press the OK button.

19.Under “get coded:”, verify that LMA is the ECU selected to get coded. Also verify the JOBNAME is equal to FA_WRITE, and then press F3 or the Execute job button.

20.After the coding has ended, you can exit out of NCS Expert.

Update ICOM Firmware Error Solved

This is the solution I find when I have trouble in updating my car diagnostic scanner BMW ICOM A firmware. Hope this helps you also.

Background:
I’m trying to update my ICOM firmware but I can only update the System/Boot firmware. Every time I try to update the Application firmware, I get a server timeout, no matter which browser I use.

Tool supported:
BMW ICOM A

Try this procedure here:
(NOTE: please be responsible to what you try, for some inexperienced may damage your device.)

1).Use your cable and connect BMW Engineer Software to port
2). Power ICOM by 12V power adapter or from 1x DLC
3). Use your browser (IE) and browse 169.254.92.38:60080/
User name: root
Password: NZY11502
4). Click “Update Firmware”,and you can find the version of firmware.
5). Select ICOM-BootImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to “SYSTEM”,
click “Send the file”
6). When it will say “Write the image file to the flash?”, click “Yes”,
then the ICOM led it will been RED
7). When it will say “The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successful”,
click “Update Firmware”
8). Select ICOM-ApplicationImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to “APPLICATION”,
click “Send the file”,the file is big so it will take some minutes to finish have patience.
9). When it will say “Write the image file to the flash?”, click “Yes”,
then the BMW ICOM A2+B+C led it will been RED again
10). When it is ok, click “reboot”.

[i8] Error: Refueling possible (solved via tools32 & E-sys)

While coding my car today (just normal feature like disable disclaimer, enable acoustic sound when lock/unlock, remember last air con setting, roll windows when opening, mirror fold with lock, etc…
Suddenly it start giving me error: Refueling possible, and sometimes refueling possible at 0%,
I tried to take the car to driving around for a while, around 5km, sometimes the error gone, but then come back quickly.

During coding, there is 1 time when coding air con setting (IHKA3 module), it finish with warning (red letter, I accidentally closed without reading the message, but then I press code FDL again, then this time ok without any error. After that the AC button is blinking (recalibrating).

I tried to use E-sys transmitter to clear all DTC but still not helping. Even tried hard reset, but the error still there.

What I try for my i8:
First time message shows: I did open the fuel cap and refill at petrol station, then close it, double check and confirmed it all ok => Message still shows.
Then I use tools32 with f01 files to clear all fault code, message still there.
Then I use E-sys and did all reset (Latest line clear all DCT), and hard reset. Lots of error messages show, but they all gone later (IE: Auto Start / Stop, transaction, pedestrian, etc.)
Then test driver (I don’t think this help at all)
Then open the fuel cap, fully open it, hang it on the small ring, then close it, then message gone.

===> I think have to clear fault code, then open then close fuel tank.

Also, close E-Sys, relaunch it, and use Read ECU instead of reading SVT.

All solved!! So if anyone have the same problem, check try to do what I did.

PS. BMW ICOM A2 I got is from www.obd2tool.com.Tool32 & E-sys are two software in Rheingold for bmw icom a2.
Oh, forgot to say, BMW ICOM has released the newest version V2015.08, just found this morning when I talked to the wobd2 customer service. The V2015.08 is only for $95, much cheaper than earlier versions.

Register Autel Maxidas DS808:

Registering the device was easy. I simply go to autel’s website and set up an account. Once I do that I take the registration code/passcode from the scan tool and register it on the website. I  then make sure that the scan tool is hooked up to my wifi which is setup in settings. Then I am ready to update the scan tool with the latest software.

Update Autel Maxidas DS808:

Make sure the Display Tablet is connected to a power source with stable access to the internet.

Tap the Update application button from the MaxiDAS Job Menu;or tap the update notification message when received one; or tap the Update icon on Vehicle Menu in Diagnostics application.

The Update application screen displays.

Check all available updates:

If you decide to update all the items, tap the Update All button.

If you only want to update one or some of the item(s), tap the Update button on the right column of the specific item(s).

Tap the Pause button to suspend the updating process. When you tap Continue to renew the update, the updating process will resume from the break point.

When the updating process is completed, the firmware will be installed automatically. The Professional Diagnostic Tool will be replaced.

Autel MaxiDAS DS808 Diagnostic System User Manual

The Autel DS808 diagnostics application allows you to establish a data link to the electronic control system of the test vehicle for vehicle diagnosis. You can operate functional tests, retrieve vehicle diagnostic information such as trouble codes, freeze frame data and live data for various vehicle control systems, such as engine, transmission, ABS, and more. The Vehicle Diagnostics screen has 2 main options:

1.Diagnosis – a comprehensive section which includes all available functions: reading, clearing, saving and printing diagnostic information, as well as performing active tests and special functions.
2.Hot Function – a separate section designed to perform vehicle scheduled service and maintenance, such as to reset the service lights and perform calibration for various systems.

After a section is selected and the tablet establishes communication with the vehicle, the corresponding function menu or selection menu displays.

Diagnosis

There are two options available when accessing the Diagnosis section:

1.Auto Scan – starts auto scanning for all the available systems on the vehicle.
2.Control Units – displays a selection menu of all available control units of the test vehicle.

After a section is selected and the tablet establishes communication with the vehicle, the corresponding function menu or selection menu displays.

Auto Scan

The Auto Scan function performs a comprehensive scanning over all the ECUs in the vehicle’s systems in order to locate and retrieve DTCs. The sample operation screen of Auto Scan displays as below:

Control Units

This option allows you to manually locate a required control system for testing through a series of choices. Please follow the menu driven procedures and make proper selection each time. The program will guide you to the diagnostic function menu after a few choices you’ve made.

The Function Menu options vary slightly for different vehicles. The function menu may include:

1.ECU Information – provides the retrieved ECU information in detail. Tap to open an information screen.
2.Trouble Codes – includes Read codes and Erase codes functions. Displays detailed information of DTC records retrieved from the test vehicle’s ECU and erases DTC records and other data from the test vehicle’s ECU.
3.Freeze Frame – displays the freeze frame data of the DCTs.
4.Live Data – retrieves and displays live data and parameters from the test vehicle’s ECU.
9.Active Test – provides specific subsystem and component tests. This selection may appear as Actuators, Actuator Test, or Function Tests, etc., and the tests options vary depending on the manufacturer and model.

NOTE

With the diagnostic toolbar on top of the screen throughout the whole diagnostic procedures, you are allowed to make various controls of the diagnostic information at any time, such as printing and saving the displayed data, getting help information, or performing data logging, etc.

How to use Autel MaxiDAS DS808 to perform a diagnostic function:

1.Establish communication with the test vehicle.
2.Identify the test vehicle by selecting from the menu options.
3.Select the Diagnosis section.
4.Locate the required system for testing by Auto Scan or through menu driven selections in Control Units.
9.Select the desired diagnostic function from the Function Menu.

ECU Information

This function retrieves and displays the specific information for the tested control unit, including unit type, version numbers and other specifications.

Read Codes

This function retrieves and displays the DTCs from the vehicle’s control system. The Read Codes screen varies for each vehicle being tested. On some vehicles, freeze frame data can also be retrieved for viewing. The sample Read Codes screen displays as below:

Erase Codes

After reading the retrieved codes from the vehicle and certain repairs have been carried out, you can erase the codes from the vehicle using this function.

Before performing this function, make sure the vehicle’s ignition key is in the ON (RUN) position with the engine off.

How to erase codes via Autel DS808 Scanner:

1.Tap Erase Codes from the Function Menu.
2.A warning message displays to inform you of data loss when this function is applied.
a) Tap Yes to continue. A confirming screen displays when the operation is successfully done.
b) Tap No to exit.
c)Tap ESC on the confirming screen to exit Erase Codes.
3.Perform the Read Codes function again to check if the code erasing is successful.

Live Data

When this function is selected, the screen displays the data list for the selected module. The items available for any control module vary from one vehicle to another. The parameters display in the order that they are transmitted by the ECM, so expect variation between vehicles.

Gesture scrolling allows you to quickly move through the data list. Simply swipe the screen up or down to locate the data you want. The figure below shows a typical Live Data screen:

Display Mode

There are 4 types of display modes available for data viewing, allowing you to view various types of parameters in the most suitable way.

Tapping the drop-down button on the right side of the parameter name opens a submenu. There are 4 buttons to configure the data display mode, and one Help button on the right that you can tap for additional information.

Each parameter item displays the selected mode independently.

1) Analog Gauge Mode – displays the parameters in form of an analog meter graph.
2) Text Mode – this is the default mode which displays the parameters in texts and shows in list format.
3) Waveform Graph Mode – displays the parameters in waveform graphs. When this mode is applied, three control buttons will appear on the right side of the parameter item, allowing you to manipulate the display status.
4) Digital Gauge Mode – displays the parameters in form of a digital gauge graph.

Full Screen Display – this option is only available in the waveform graph mode and mostly used in Graph Merge status for data comparison.

There are three control buttons available on the top right side of the screen under this mode.

How to edit the waveform color and line thickness in a data graph

1.Select 1 to 3 parameter items to display in Waveform Graph mode.
2.Tap the Zoom-in Button on the right to display the data graph in full screen.
3.Select a parameter item on the left column.
4.Select a desired sample color from the middle column.
9.Select a desired sample line thickness from the right column.
6.Repeat step 3-9 to edit the waveform for each parameter item.
7.Tap Done to save the setting and exit, or tap Cancel to exit without saving.

Active Test

The Active Test function is used to access vehicle-specific subsystem and component tests. Available tests vary depending on the manufacturer, year, and model, and only the available tests display in the menu.

During an active test, the tester outputs commands to the ECU in order to drive the actuators. This test determines the integrity of the system or parts by reading the engine ECU data, or by monitoring the operation of the actuators, such as switching a solenoid, relay, or switch between two operating states.

Selecting Active Test opens a menu of test options that varies by make and model. Selecting a menu option activates the test. Follow on-screen instructions while performing tests. The content and pattern of the on-screen information vary according to the type of test being performed. Some toggle and variable control tests display Active Test Controls at the top of the screen with data stream information below, or vice versa.

The functional buttons at the lower right corner of the Active Test screen manipulate the test signals. The operational instructions are displayed on the main section of the test screen. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and make appropriate selections to complete the tests. Each time when an operation is successfully executed, message such as “Command Finished”, “Activation Successful”, or something similar displays.

Tap the ESC functional button to exit the test when finished.

Special Functions

These functions perform various component adaptations, allowing you to recalibrate or configure certain components after making repairs or replacement.

The main menu displays the supported special functions for the test vehicle.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the desired function. When the operation is done, an execution status message such as Completed, Finished or Successful, displays. Tap the ESC button to exit the function.

The Service section is specially designed to provide you with quick access to the vehicle systems for various scheduled service and maintenance performances. The typical service operation screen is a series of menu driven executive commands. By following the on-screen instructions to select appropriate execution options, enter correct values or data, and perform necessary actions, the system will guide you through the complete performance for various service operations.

The most commonly performed service functions include:

1.Oil Reset Service

Oil Reset Service

This function allows you to perform reset for the Engine Oil Life system, which calculates an optimal oil life change interval depending on the vehicle driving conditions and climate. The Oil Life Reminder must be reset every time the oil is changed, so the system can calculate when the next oil change is required.

Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) Service

This function allows you to quickly look up the tire sensor IDs from the vehicle’s ECU, as well as to perform TPMS programming and reset procedures after tire sensors are replaced.

Electric Parking Brake (EPB) Service

This function has a multitude of usages to maintain the electronic braking system safely and effectively. The applications include deactivating and activating the brake control system, assisting with brake fluid control, opening and closing brake pads, and setting brakes after disc or pad replacement, etc.

ABS/SRS Services

This function allows you to perform various bi-directional tests to check the operating conditions of both the Anti-lock Braking System and the Supplemental Restraint System, such as Automated Bleeding, Pump Motor Test, and checking Module information, etc.

Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Service

This service function allows you to perform calibration for the Steering Angle Sensor, which permanently stores the current steering wheel position as the straight-ahead position in the steering angle sensor EEPROM. On successful completion of the calibration, the steering angle sensor fault memory is automatically cleared.

DPF Regeneration Service

The Diesel Particulate Filter service function performs the regeneration procedure which is the DPF cleaning operation to clear the blockage through continuous burning of the particulate matter captured in the DPF filter. If the DPF light on the vehicle comes on and you successfully complete a DPF regeneration cycle, you will notice that the DPF light will automatically turn off.

A nice new tool.It reads and clears trouble codes, control and test BMS/Oil Reset/ SRS/EPB/DPF systems. Quick scan and easy to use as well as excellent tech-support. For the price of this you will be getting all generic OBD2 reading and alot of manufacturer specific codes as more updates become available. Autel MD808 PRO has a nice color screen and also has an SD card slot. It comes with an 16GB SD card so you can download your updates quicker as far as write speed and your machine will be a bit faster when it reads the data on the card.As far as more features it will do many things depending on the car and depending if Autel has released it on an update .For the DIY’er this is batter than a generic code reader. I would recommend this tool for guys on a budget that want a pretty descent diagnostic reader. It is just one step down from the Autel MD802 full systems. And I approve this message…lol. Seriously this tool is pretty cool.Worth buy.

It seems it is a new launched tool in 2017. It is not so bad to try something new. The package was wrapped well, the deivce was protected well by the durable case and in its middle volume,easy to handle. Packaging consists of car connector wire, USB wire, quick reference guide,SD card, CD ,user manual and carry case. This unit was advertised as being able to diagnose SRS codes, so I tried on my Versa Note SV 2014 and it works well.In addition,used it to reset steering angle sensor (SAS), good job! MD808 was advertised as being able to diagnose SRS codes so I tested it on my a Versa Note SV 2014. The result is it worked as advertised! In addition, it is a great product it can read and clear codes on my Chevy Vehicles ABS system.It is a very nice product to use so I gave it 5 stars.

Bought it after reading all the reviews. I was serious about learning the basics of auto fault code reading before registered and downloaded current data per manufacturer’s instructions. I own a 1996 GMC Sierra half ton truck, and a 99 GMC Yukon, this device works fine for both. I also have a 2006 Chevy Duramax with a suspect O2 heater issue. When this is plugged into the Chevy, it works great as advertised. The main reason I bought this scanner was to clear SRS lights (thinking it erased the crash data),and the rest of the functions also worked very well, I was impressed. Can’t beat the value of this scanner.

From my perspectives as a pro home mechanic, I have to say Autel MaxiDiag MD808 is a very useful tool giving you the most fault information on four major systems (Engine, Transmission, ABS and SRS). In addition when it comes to fault detection on the late vehicles, it seems that Autel Scanner MD808 is a great tool to access those common modules like (control and test BMS/Oil Reset/ SRS/EPB/DPF systems, oil service reset, battery registration and reset,diesel particulate service including forced regeneration, reset steering angle sensor and parking brake control module). This has to be one of the easiest and most cost-effective diagnositc tool I have purchased. Recommend to anyone that just wants something easy to update and get going.

I bought to this to fix my car which has engine light on, blinking cruise control, traction light on. I plugged in the scanner and the code was explained. That was so easy! I then searched the error code online and erase it. I feel so fortunate to try the scanner on my own instead of paying someone directly to diagnose and reset the light. 1.I think DS708 is the first generation of iconic device for Autel, because of its reasonable price and cost efficient function. I owned one DS708 for many years, but regret that it will not be updated any more. So I intended to add its new extended version- DS808 for my small repair shop, which can fully meet my requirements. Its new CPU and LCD touch screen, dramatically improved the entire users’ experience, much more smooth comparing with DS708. Personally, I would recommend this tool for those small shops with limit budgets. Of course, if money is not a problem, Maxisys Elite may be your good choice.

2.Actually I’m self-maintainer not a shop guy, I already have Diaglink but need more professional device, which can help me do some features as adaptation or Matching & lots of things. I do like MS908P but expensive, so I’m buying DS808, affordable price and good performance.

3.Compatible to my cars,it seems it is compatible to many US, European’Asian vehicles ,user friendly and has software for different vehicle models and systems. Answer: Yes you can reprogram keys with this tester

Answer: DS808 cannot program the abs module. Only maxisys pro can do it.

Answer: Registering the device was easy. You simply go to autel’s website and set up an account. Once you do that you take the registration code/passcode from the scan tool and register it on the website. You then make sure that the scan tool is hooked up to your wifi which is setup in settings. Then you are ready to update the scan tool with the latest software.

Changing the language settings is also easy. You simply do that in settings as well and have multiple different choices. I do know Spanish was one of them. I returned mine because it could not code or reset any adaptaions in any modules on my vehicles. My vehicles are about 15 years old and I think the support on older vehicles goes away with the updates. It probably has more capabilities on the newer vehicles. I should have purchased one of these 5 years ago and never updated it so that the scan tool could retain its capabilities.

Question: What is the head set used for with the scantool

Answer: It’s not used with the tool is just a free give away to get you to buy an outdated tool that according to autel there will be no more updates after Dec 2017. I sent it back because I couldn’t get it to update or more like it removed software during update which is another common complaint on their site. I feel it’s dishonest to sell things claiming a year full updates and it’s not a year is much less than a year but I guess China isn’t afraid of a class action for fraud.

Step2. Connect SKP-900 key programmer to computer using the USB cable.

Register SKP-900 official website in member centre. Download the update software and unzip it to get the “update bin file”.

Step3. Extract car key programmer SKP900 Update Tool V2.4 zip file and SKP900 USB Driver zip file. Now install SKP900 driver: go to “My Computer” → “Properties” → “Hardware” → “Device Manager”

The USB serial will not be found now. Click the “Scan” button to scan the hardware.

Step4. You will see a Found New Hardware Wizard for “USB-Serial”, click “Next”.

Step5. There comes another Found New Hardware Wizard for “USB Serial Port”, choose the option “Install from a list or a special location”, click “Next”.
