But, Tech 2 can only change/do stuff GM intended where HPT can change all kinds of tables GM wouldn’t want us messing with
So both have pluses/minuses depending on what you want to do

I just checked my OBD2 scan tool Tech II clone against my 2006 C6. In the ABS section there is an “Automated Bleed” option. In the Radiosection there is a “VIN Relearn” option. I’ve never actually used either one, but I bet it works.
The Tech II clone is literally running the same software as the GM Tech 2 Scanner, so it has all the same functions. There are a few caveats: the standard clone power supply will cause the unit to reset if you run the starter motor, apparently, though this can be fixed. Also, operating while tethered to a PC involves a bunch of licensing hacks and other nonsense. But you only need to do that if you want to flash the ECU firmware.
The Tech II lets you see (and individually reset) all the DTCs from all the modules. It also has a bunch of special functions and bidirectional capabilities.
It’s great as a standalone diagnostics tool but it isn’t intended to modify ECU parameters like tuning software does. This is a tool for fixing the car, not modifying it.

same problem as recording images to the memory card via the Tech 2 and TIS

Hello everyone. A few days ago saw that often face the same problem as recording images to the memory card via the Tech2 Scan Tool and TIS.

Initially I thought this is a typical problem with MAX232, only a little deeper, I saw that the Tech 2 is well connected with TIS, but attempts to write through it, memory cards, success did not. Having started to study the problem, I found the following that through the card reader in your laptop works, and through TIS not. And that’s what this difference is expressed: the fact that the card reader work with cards with 3.3 Volts and 5.0 Volts. And that is what is written in the instructions to the Tech 2, the photo shows.
In the end, I checked everything with me in the presence of a memory card, here is their photo:

As a conclusion, until I found how to solve this problem, it is best card to rewrite only through the card reader in the laptop. Another way to try to lower the voltage in the Obd2 scan tool Tech 2 so that it more accurately worked with credit cards, there is a successful experiment, but there are very few tests that were carried out and what it may cause, or to try to slightly modify these memory cards.
Just want to try another experiment, but I still havent for it is only necessary, as only something I can do, or find a better solution will be described later.

What can I do with a GM Tech2 on Chevrolet C5

This is a write-up for those with a GM Tech 2 Scan Tool on Chevrolet C5

Tech 2 scanner is a diagnostic tool for the most part. It can be used to program out/in certain RPO’s in the BCM and can be used to bleed the ABS brake system without introducing air into the system. The extent to which it can be used to tune a Chevrolet C5 is that if you have a PCM Image that will work for your car you can save the current PCM Image and flash the new one you have onto the PCM. It cannot go in and individually change the tuning tables in the PCM as can say either EFI Live or HP Tuners tuning tools. But then those tools cannot touch the BCM either.

If you do or plan to do a lot of Professional Diagnostic Tool work on your car it can be a worthwhile tool. Most of the diagnostic charts in the factory service manual assume the availability of a Tech 2. But you have to learn to use the tool like any other computerized diagnostic tool. It has layers and layers of menus to wade through. But in certain diagnostic situations it can be an invaluable tool because it allows you to turn on and off hundreds of computerized settings to aid in the diagnosis process.

GM intentionally dumbed down the capabilities of the Tech 2 to change things to avoid law suits due to an errant technician that changed engine or emissions settings that could result in engine damage or emissions violations.

GM Tech2, the bi-directional scan tool can access all the 10 computers in the c5 corvette. That means it can scan for DTC codes, allow the adding or removing of most accessory codes like turning off the mag ride shocks to install regular schocks, fixing window regulator problems, etc. For Bi-directional it can active the ABS system to flush the brake fluid, reset the Long Term Fuel Trims, eliminate the 1-4 shift on manual trans, etc. It cannot make changes (like a tune tool) to the transmission or engine management system. For the avid DIY’er it is a great tool.
In the C5, the “computers” (technically they are modules) and they communicate over the OBDII compatible DLC data bus to each other. The range from you radio to your ride control, to your HVAC system. Even the Bose head unit talks to the PCM and BCM through this bus, but the CD changer talks over a “private” data bus to the head unit.

The Sensor Modules that can be pulled up from the DIC are:
PCM, BCM, TCS, RTD, IPC, HVAC, LDCM, RDCM, SCM, RFA, and SDM.
Only those C5’s with RPO F45 or F55 will have RTD.

Control Module Stand-Alone Programming Adapter (J-45211) for Cadillacs

The J-45211 control module stand-alone programming adapter (Figure VIIC-41), also called the PCM programming adapter harness, is used to connect the Tech 2 to a vehicle’s PCM and perform SPS functions for the 2000 or later Cadillac models DeVille, Seville, and Eldorado. The J-45211 isolates the PCM from a vehicle’s electrical system so that the activity of other on-board computers cannot interrupt the communication between the Tech 2 and the PCM.

NOTICE: Failure to maintain unbroken J-45211 connections (PCM, Tech 2, power, and ground) throughout the entire programming procedure may cause an interruption, resulting in PERMANENT PCM DAMAGE

Procedure for Using the J-45211 Tool:
1.  Ensure that the Techline terminal and the GM Tech2 Scanner are updated with their latest respective software.
2.  Turn the vehicle ignition off and remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder. Turn off all electrical power consumers and accessories.
3.  Open the hood and measure the battery voltage directly at the battery positive and negative terminals using the J-39200 digital multimeter. If the negative battery terminal is inaccessible, or the battery is notlocated under the hood, check the voltage between engine block ground and the underhood “+” junction block.
4.  If the vehicle’s battery voltage is not 12.0 volts or higher, charge the battery before continuing. When finished charging the battery, disconnect the charger from the battery before programming the PCM.
5. Locate the PCM and disconnect the vehicle harness connectors from the PCM.
6. Connect the J-45211 harness connectors to the PCM.
7. Connect the J-45211 power clips directly to the vehicle battery terminals. If the battery terminals are inaccessible, or the battery is not located under the hood, then connect to the engine block(ground), and to the underhood source of vehicle battery’s positive 12-volt power.
8. Observe the red battery LED on the J-45211. The red LED should remain lit whenever the J-45211 is connected to the battery voltage. If the red LED does not illuminate, check the tool’s five-amp fuse. If the fuse is good and yet the red LED will not illuminate,for assistance.
9. Toggle the power switch on J-45211 to apply ignition voltage to the Auto Scanner Tool.
10. The yellow and green LEDs should illuminate when the power switch is toggled on. The yellow LED monitors the ignition voltage being applied to the control module. The green LEDs are a feedback signal from the control module indicating that the modules’s internal circuits are operating.
11. Connect the Tech 2 to the J-45211 and enter Service Programming System.
12. Select and perform Request Information.
13. After the Tech 2 has completed the information request, toggle the J-45211 switch off.
14. Turn off the Tech 2 and disconnect it from the J-45211.
15. Connect the Tech 2 to the Techline terminal. Download the new PCM calibration into the Tech 2 using the Techline terminal and TIS software. After the download into the Tech 2 from Obd2tool.com is complete, disconnect the Tech 2 from the Techline terminal.
16. Reconnect Tech 2 to J-45211 and toggle the tool’s power switch on.
17. Enter Service Programming System, and select and perform Program.
18. After programming is complete, toggle the J-45211 switch off, and wait until the green LEDs turn off before continuing or disconnecting any connectors.
19. Turn off the Tech 2 and disconnect it from the J-45211.
20. Disconnect the J-45211 from the PCM.
21. Disconnect the power clips from the vehicle battery terminals.
22. Reconnect the vehicle harness connectors to the PCM and reinstall PCM.
23. Connect the Tech 2 to the DLC connector under the instrument panel, and start the engine.
24. Turn the Tech 2 on, “build” the vehicle, and select Diagnostic Circuit Check, then Clear All DTCs.

Note:This will clear all DTCs in all control modules simultaneously.

25. If the Service Engine Soon light comes back on after clearing  DTCs, another problem may be present or a CKP System Variation Learn Procedure may need to be performed. Follow existing service manual procedures.

GM Tech2 Initial Hardware Installation

The GM Tech2 hardware initial installation requires the following seven tasks:
1.  Remove the RS-232 loopback adapter (P/N 3000112) from the storage case (P/N 3000116). Plug it into the RS-232 port.

2.  Attach the Tech 2 DLC cable (P/N 3000095) to the VCI connector.

3.  Locate the DLC loopback adapter (P/N 3000109) in the storage case. Attach it to the DLC cable .

4.  Locate the NAO (P/N 3000113) or Universal (P/N 3000115) power supply and appropriate power cord in the storage case. Insert the power jack into the Tech 2 DLC cable

or into the bottom of the Car Diagnostic Tool Tech 2 next to DLC cable connector.

5.  Turn on power by pressing the PWR button located on the Tech 2 keypad.

6.  Tech 2 hardware will be verified automatically by the POST test. (For information on this program, refer to Section VI – Troubleshooting.)

7.  Disconnect the RS-232 loopback adapter, the power supply, and the DLC loopback adapter and return to the Tech 2 storage case from Obd2tool.com.

Unlock Chevy TrailBlazer radio using GM Tech2 scanner

I have successfully unlocked the radio on my Chevy TrailBlazer with a clone Tech 2 Scan Tool from China yesterday. Here I would like to share the procedure.

If you also like to unlock the radio, please complete the following procedure, using the Professional Diagnostic Tool Tech 2 scanner, in order to properly set up communication:

Connect Tech2 to the OBD port of the vehicle. When the screen of the tool illuminates, it means the tool hooks up with the car. Then you can start the process:

1.Go to the main menu and select: Diagnostics.

2.Select Vehicle Identification and then the following options:

– Model Year

– LD Trk, MPV, Incomplete

3.At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body

4.At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following:

– Appropriate model

– Appropriate Air Conditioning

– Navigation Radio

5.Select: Navigation Radio.

6.Select: Special Functions.

7.Select: VIN Relearn.

8.Then you will get a message: “Do you want to clear radio theft information?”

9.To begin clearing, press the soft touch key on the top right of the scan tool. The scan tool will display “Clearing Radio Theft in Progress.”

10.Press EXIT on the scan tool and cycle the ignition.

Done. Disconnect GM Tech II from the car.

GM Tech2 clone program ECU with SPS in TIS2000

Here is the step-by-step instruction on programming GM (General Motors) ECUs with Tech2 scanner and SPS (Service Programming System) application in TIS2000.

NOTE:

Before using the SPS, make sure that the GM Tech 2 Scan Tool and the pc contain the latest software, the battery of the vehicle is fully charged, only the ignition is on power,
and all cables are connected properly. TIS2000 will not work on 2007 up GM, and software must work together with TIS2000 USB key. If you need to program Saab ECU,
you had to use Saab TIS2000 and USB dongle.

Step 1: Instruction for TIS2000 software

1.Connect the Tech II to the pc.

Note: The hardware key (HWK) has to be registered prior to working with ‘Service Programming System’. To register a hardware key, the form that is enclosed with
the hardware key kit has to be filled in and sent to the address at the top. In case the form is missing, the document is also in the TIS 2000 newsletter (see icon in the
TIS 2000 tool bar). At first, the user receives a temporary code until the key is registered on the next TIS 2000 CD.

Hardware keys that have already been registered are still valid!

To register the hardware key select ‘Hardware Key Registration’ in the menu ‘Configuration’.

2.Start TIS 2000 on the pc.

3.Select the application ‘Service Programming System’ on the TIS 2000 start page.

4. On ‘Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process’ (picture below) screen make the desired selection for

1) the used Tech2 diagnostic tool

2) the reprogramming of an ECU that was not exchanged or the replacement/programming of a new ECU

5.Click “Next” button to continue.

Step 2: Data Request

1) Connect Tech 2 scanner to vehicle. Power on device – “Tech 2” is displayed on the screen, then press “ENTER”.

2) Turn ignition to ON without start the engine!!!

3) Select “F1: Service Programming System (SPS)” in the main menu.

4) Press “F0: Request Info” on Tech 2.

5) If Tech 2 has already stored vehicle data they will be displayed now. In that case, Tech 2 asks you to either use the current data (hold data) or request further information from the ECU (continue).

6) For the selection of “Next” the vehicle has to be identified as requested by OBD II Scanner Tech 2.

Note: Depending on the model year and the selected model either a reprogramming of the ECU (F0: Engine) or of the TCM (F1: Transmission) can be selected.

7) During the Request Info the Tech 2 receives information from the selected device. If the ECU was replaced a “Request Info” has to be performed for the NEW unit. Since the new ECU is not programmed on delivery, the retrieved information is not complete. For that reason, TIS 2000 gives instructions as how to enter the missing vehicle data.

8) Follow the instructions on the Tech 2. Then press “Exit” on the Tech 2, switch it off and disconnect it from the vehicle.

Step 3: Data exchange

1.Connect Tech 2 to the pc, switch it on, and click on ‘Next’ on the pc.
2.Confirm VIN or, if necessary, enter correct VIN, then select ‘Next
3.Validate vehicle data and, if necessary, change with the pull-down menus

7.A new window displays a “Summary” (follow below) with the selected data. Continue with ‘Next’. Select “Reprog” button to download the latest calibration data onto the TechII diagnostic tool.

Note: It is not possible to reprogram an ECU with the same software version.

1.The window ‘Transfer Data’ is displayed. A bar shows the progress of the download.
2.At the end of the download, a window is displayed with the request to connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle in order to finish the programming process.
3.After the closing of the SPS application the TIS 2000 start screen is again displayed. Finally, switch off the Tech 2 and disconnect it from the pc.

Step 4: Program ECU

1.Connect Tech 2 to the vehicle.
2.Switch on Tech 2 – start screen appears.
3.Turn ignition (Do not start motor!).
4.Press “Enter” in the Tech 2 start screen.
5.Select “F1: Service Programming System” in the main menu and then “F1: Program ECU”.
6.Follow the instructions on the Tech 2 screen.
7.During the download the Tech 2 screen shows the message “Programming in Progress”.
8.At the end of the download the Tech 2 shows the message “Programming was successful”. The button “Exit” leaves the program. First, turn off the ignition of the vehicle, then switch off the Tech 2 and disconnect it from the vehicle.
9.Turn off ignition for 30 seconds before starting the motor. Additional information is available in the section “Check programming”.

Alternative Programming with “Pass Thru”

In addition to the procedure described above, there is an alternative programming mode called “Pass Thru”. In that case, the data are directly downloaded from the pc to the ECU in the vehicle.

Although the Tech 2 is still needed in that mode, the data entry and the download control is done directly at the pc. Altogether, that method is faster, and it is recommended when a pc with TIS 2000 is within 3m of the vehicle.

1.Connect Tech 2 to the vehicle.
2.Connect Tech 2 to the PC switch on Tech 2.
3.Start TIS 2000 on the PC.
4.Select the icon ‘Service Programming System’ (Fig. 1) on the TIS 2000 start page.
5.Start TIS 2000 on the PC.
6.On the screen ‘Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process’ (See picture below) make a selection for

***Pass-Thru mode

***the reprogramming of an ECU that was not exchanged or the replacement/programming of a new ECU

***the ECU location.

Then clock ‘Next’ button.

Trouble and what Global TIS and Car Scanner Tech2 find out:

They have read codes to do with ignition and immobilizer and found that the cim is not picking up the old or new keys in the switch he tells me that the chip in the key is not being energized so the cim can’t read the key.

Trouble analysis:

The chip in the key is read by the ignition switch, called the Ignition Switch Module (ISM). Maybe the fault lies there.

How to remove?

1.Operate/move the seats to their rearmost positions.

2.Remove the front side pieces from the floor console.

3.Remove the cover from over the gear lever housing, use 82 93 474 Removal tool in the rear edge of the cover and pull back.

4.AUT: Remove the clamp.

5.Remove the cover under the handbrake by pulling it straight out.

6.Remove the cover on the passenger side by squeezing the cover and lifting it up. Remove the compartment under the cover on the passenger side.

7.Lift up the rubber mat in the floor console storage compartment and remove the screws.

8.Remove the floor console screws; note that screws for plastic and aluminum are different.

9.Remove the sound insulation (certain cars).

10Press in the four catches (two on each long side) and press down the ignition switch module.

11.Lift up the floor console slightly and remove the ignition switch module.

12.Remove the connector; see “Connectors, handling and checking” item 1D.

13.Everything will be OK in the end. If it’s not OK, it’s not the end…
